Today, Baiyun Railway Station in Guangzhou, known as the “super railway station” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, officially commenced operation, with the inaugural train C1893 departing the station. This also marks the first train for the Shantou-Shanwei High Speed Railway’s Shantounan-Shanwei section.

According to information from CR-Guangzhou, the newly opened Shantounan-Shanwei section is 142 kilometers long with a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour, adding a new passenger transport corridor to the eastern part of Guangdong. In the initial phase of operation, the railway authority will arrange passenger trains on a daily, weekend, and peak basis, with up to 24 daily high speed trains. The Baiyun Railway Station in Guangzhou will serve as the originating and terminating station for multiple railway lines, including Beijing-Guangzhou High Speed Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway, and Guangzhou-Maoming Railway, further enhancing Guangzhou’s passenger transport capacity as a railway hub and adding a new urban landmark to the beautiful city.

The Shantou-Shanwei High Speed Railway is an essential part of the coastal corridor of the “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” high speed railway network. Starting from Shantou Railway Station, it connects to Guangzhou-Shanwei High Speed Railway’s Shanwei Railway Station, with a total length of 162 kilometers and a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour. Currently, the dominant engineering for the Shantou-Shantounan section, the Shantou Bay Undersea Tunnel Project, is under orderly construction. After its opening, the travel time from Shantounan Railway Station to Shanwei Railway Station, Guangzhoudong Railway Station, and Shenzhenbei Railway Station will be reduced to 36 minutes, 113 minutes, and 109 minutes, respectively.

The opening and operation of the Shantounan-Shanwei section of the Shantou-Shanwei High Speed Railway have integrated the eastern part of Guangdong into a rapid passage connecting to the world-class city cluster of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This will promote the deep integration of population, logistics, and capital flows in the eastern part of Guangdong into the Greater Bay Area, bringing enormous opportunities for local development. It will also strengthen the connection between the Chaoshan region (coastal areas of southeastern Guangdong) and surrounding cities, promoting regional integration and development.
