On the morning of October 16, two cold chain freight trains loaded with Yunnan’s special agricultural products, including broccoli and pomegranates, departed from Yanhe Railway Station in Yuxi, Yunnan Province. These trains are headed to Vientiane, Laos, and Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, signifying the official commencement of international cold chain freight operations on the China-Laos Railway and China-Vietnam Railway.

The China-Laos international cold chain freight train relies on the China-Laos Railway, creating a two-way route between Kunming and Yuxi in Yunnan to Vientiane, Laos, with a total journey time of 26 hours. The China-Vietnam international cold chain freight train is based on the Kunming-Yuxi-Hekou Railway and the China-Vietnam Meter-Gauge Railway, establishing a direct route from Kunming and Yuxi to Lao Cai Province, Vietnam, with an entire trip taking just 20 hours.

These international cold chain freight trains are characterized by safety, stability, strong timeliness, ample transport capacity, excellent refrigeration equipment, and high freshness retention. Leveraging these freight trains, Yunnan’s distinctive agricultural products maintain high freshness levels from production bases to consumers abroad. In the initial stage of operation, there is one train from Kunming to Vientiane each day and one from Kunming to Lao Cai Province each week. The railway department plans to dynamically adjust the frequency of train services based on customer demand.

Yunnan is strategically located at the confluence of China, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. It is a vital intersection point for the “Belt and Road” Initiative and the development strategy of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, serving as China’s gateway to Southeast Asia and South Asia, and enjoying the distinctive advantages of developing port economy and international trade. In recent years, Yunnan has expedited the construction of international railway corridors, such as the China-Vietnam Railway, China-Laos Railway, and China-Myanmar Railway, forming a railway hub centered around Kunming, connecting the entire country, and radiating to Southeast Asian and South Asian nations.

As of October 10, since the China-Laos Railway began operating, it has transported over 27 million tons of goods, with imports and exports totaling 5.55 million tons. Regarding the China-Vietnam International Railway combination, it has run 4,100 trains to date and transported over 1.6 million tons of cross-border goods, injecting significant vitality into the region’s high-quality economic and social development.
